A MILITARY band marched up the hill, a churchman led prayers and a Union flag was raised, as Hampshire paid tribute as part of Armed Forces Week.

About 200 people gathered in Castle Yard, Winchester, yesterday to honour the men and women who risk their lives serving their country.

Among them were senior military officers, the Royal British Legion, judges, lawyers and staff from the nearby law courts, pupils from Kings’ School, many councillors, city MP Steve Brine and tourists.

The band of the Royal Corps of Signals had earlier played a selection of martial music and show tunes at the Buttercross before, with personnel from all three services, marching up the High Street.

Dame Mary Fagan, Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, said: “Today is a very important occasion in the life of our county. All over Hampshire flags will be raised in support of our armed forces, both past veterans and present personnel.

“These flags remind us of our debt of gratitude we owe them.”

After the brief ceremony a reception was held in the Great Hall.

Similar events were held in Romsey and Fareham.

Tomorrow many Reservists will wear their uniforms to work as part of the week.
