A HAMPSHIRE firm is reaching for the skies after helping to construct a breathtaking 50 metre high tourist attraction.

Eastleigh -based Wessex Galvanizers was asked to use its ‘hot dip’ galvanizing treatment on 32 tonnes of steel used to support the £6 million Brighton Wheel, pictured above.

The metal work was used to produce all the supporting elements including the base frame, platform, and columns for the wheel, which has been built close to Brighton’s Palace Pier.

Dubbed the south’s answer to the London Eye, the structure features 32 air-conditioned gondolas and enables up to 284 visitors a time to enjoy a 12 minute ride of three full rotations.

Each capsule includes commentary by comedian Steve Coogan while customers can enjoy panoramic views across the South Downs.

Richard Whiddett, commercial manager of Wessex Galvanizers, said: “The Brighton Wheel provides some breathtaking views out over the coastline, which I’ve seen for myself after taking a spin on the ride a few weeks ago.

“We’re extremely honoured to have contributed towards what has grown to be a truly spectacular tourist attraction,”

The wheel began operation in October last year and is expected to attract 250,000 visitors over its five-year installation creating 30 new jobs.
