DAN McMillan and John Pearce had their Olympic handball hopes extinguished on Saturday with a fourth defeat that exposed Great Britain’s inexperience.

A 34-17 loss to Tunisia in group A ruled out any chance of reaching the quarter-finals, although the south coast pair still have a match to play today again Iceland.

And McMillan, left, based in Lymington , thinks it is high time Team GB took out their frustrations on their opponents to show the world they are here to be taken seriously.

Two goals by Pearce, from Poole, and five by Sebastien Edgar were among the highlights for Britain.

“I’ve got mixed feelings about the match in that some of the things that we normally do well we did badly, and some of the things we normally do badly we did quite well,” McMillan, 29, said.

McMillan is keen to correct those who see his side as making up the numbers, even if a few of them are playing catch-up having been recruited from other sports – basketball in McMillan’s case.

The chance to prove they belong arises against Iceland.

He said: “Some of our players came from other sports and we’re on a learning curve. But no matter how people perceive us, we’re here to compete.

“We want to surprise a few people, win games and make sure people don’t take us lightly.

“We’re not here to soak up the atmosphere. But we can’t complain if we have given it everything we’ve got.

“There’s one last game and that means one last chance to show what we can do.”
