A FREE wheelchair skills workshop that inspired a young disabled man to become a top wheelchair basketball star is being run in Hampshire.

Held at Applemore Technology College, in Dibden Purlieu on Tuesday, August 14, from 9.30am to 3pm, the workshop is open to all young wheelchair users, manual or powered.

It is run by Go Kids Go, a national charity providing free training courses for young wheelchair users throughout the UK and Ireland.

Charity patron Ade Adepitan came to prominence in the wheelchair dance sequence on the BBC, as an ambassador for London’s 2012 Olympic bid as well as playing wheelchair basketball for England.

Training manager Roy Wild said: “He was one of the first young wheelchair users to come on one of our courses, some years ago and he is now a great role model for a lot of the children who currently attend our workshops.

“On the workshop we teach skills such as manoeuvring, back wheel balancing, so that you can go up and down kerbs independently, and we also play games like wheelchair basketball and try out wheelchair dance.

“We bring extra wheelchairs so family and friends can get involved and join in the games.”
