COUNCIL leaders in Southampton last night approved a redeployment scheme that will see more than 200 temporary workers let go to free up jobs for other permanent staff face with redundancy.
Finance chief Simon Letts said temporary contracts would not be renewed to create a pool of vacancies for permanent staff who find their jobs axed in looming budget cuts.
As reported by the Daily Echo yesterday , under an extended redeployment scheme, based on a council initiative in Sunderland, staff faced with redundancy will be kept on the payroll for four months and given temporary work and retraining while a new permanent position is sought for them.
Labour leaders had initially said the redeployment period would run for 12 months. A fuller version of the scheme will be brought in next year.
The council employs around 240 temps. Cllr Letts said those who have been working for the council for more than two years, understood to be around 25, would be offered permanent contracts.
