Man sparks high-rise fire alert after falling asleep while cooking

Weston towers Weston towers

A DRUNKEN Southampton man sparked a major fire operation after he fell asleep in his flat while cooking.

More than 25 firefighters from across Southampton were called to International Way, Weston , at 2.06am this morning after neighbours in the Rotterdam Towers smelt burning.

On arrival at the high-rise they discovered that a man in a fifth floor flat has dozed off while cooking, having been drinking during the night.

Luckily, he had woken up by the time the crews from Hightown, Redbridge , St Mary’s and Botley arrived and was able to stop the burning before a fire had the chance to start.

Firefighters are now urging residents not to cook while under the influence of alcohol.

Maybe the American trailer park idea might be good in this country?
Costs less than a solid building if they torch it then no one else's lives are put at risk.
if they're known to be that bad give them the most basic unit possible

I read this as just another tower block resident wanting a house and using this route to gain it!

this is the trouble... we are interupting the natural selection of the gene pool.... 1000s of years ago this moron would have been eaten by a passing sabre tooth tiger... civilisation is doing our species no favours whatsoever...

This is 100% true. People of this order really should be culled - they offer no benefit to society whatsoever and are a burden on people who can be bothered.

How do you know this man isn't a hard worker, working full-time and simply enjoyed a night out, came home and under the influence had the munchies?

People of what order? Beyond where he lives, and what happened to him early this morning, you know nothing about him.

Hopefully, I'd hate to think I've got to the age where my brain isn't working properly, like I suspect some others that post here. Perhaps they are secret drinkers.

ah i see we have a couple of fans of eugenics in. well done both of you.

"culled", really? honestly? is that how you really feel?

let me ask you a serious question, do you ever look at the comments you make and think "ah maybe i should have thought about that a bit before posting it" or "i wonder how i come across to other people when i post some of these hateful comments"?

Need a good looking blue eyed blonde to come and cook my supper then. Knowing my luck it'll be a bl00dy bloke.

calfri radiators were fitted to them recently.

I know that they are electric but would not cause a fire.

They have water in them like normal ones.

Perhaps he was cooking his food on the Calfri radiators. I have heard they get very hot.

Look it's easy for people to start something but then to get side tracked & forget.
in the case of cooking this seems to be a regular thing in these tower blocks.
I've suggested trailer parks as if this type of thing happens no one else should have their lives put at risk & the cost of replacing a trailer would be cheaper than repairing a tower block
