CONTROVERSIAL proposals to create a student tower block in the heart of a community go before Southampton City Council on Tuesday.

Liberty Living wants to change the use of Orion’s Point in St Mary’s and turn it into a |16-storey tower block for double the number of students already living there.

Councillors are recommended to approve the application, which would see a total of 854 students housed there.

The plans will provide car park spaces and other facilities with shops underneath the flats, while three or four more staff would have to be employed to cope with the added influx of students.

As part of the works a new security fence and secure pedestrian entrances will be created from St Mary’s Road and Dorset Street.

Residents in Newtown and |St Mary’s organised a meeting last month to express their opposition to the proposals.
