THE singer with an up-and-coming band was hit in the face with a bottle at a popular Southampton music venue.

The incident happened just hours after the Daily Echo launched a campaign to call time on glass in city centre pubs and clubs.

Todd Marriot, of I Was A Cub Scout, was left with a split lip, cut face and gashed gums after a bottle was thrown from the audience.

He was also hit on the shoulder by another bottle during the set at The Joiners on Saturday night.

It is understood that Todd provoked the bottle attack by hurling two plastic glasses into the crowd, which reportedly hit two female fans.

The group was forced to cancel their show the following night in Leicester because Todd could not open his mouth properly.

The Daily Echo launched its Last Orders for Glass campaign earlier calling for late-night bars and clubs in Southampton to serve all drinks in plastic glasses.

Todd said: "They managed to cut the outside of my face, gums and inner lip, resulting in a mouth full of blood. I can't really open my mouth too good.

"Two glasses were at the top of the stage which I attempted to wear as glasses on my eyes. I then tossed them into the air. I was told after the show had finished that I hit some young ladies."

A spokesman for the band confirmed the incident, adding that the singer was not seriously hurt.

Hampshire Police is not investigating the incident.

Kai Harris, of Joiners Live, said: "There were a couple of undesirables in the audience who threw bottles at the band.

"We actually use plastic glasses at The Joiners. Unfortunately plastic bottles are very expensive compared to glass bottles. The breweries need to lower the prices of plastic bottles to make pubs and clubs even safer."
