Museum for Spitfire pilots put in doubt

THE Ministry of Defence has been urged to ensure plans for a museum commemorating the efforts of Spitfire pilots in the Second World War are not delayed because of the recession.

Harrow Council said uncertainty over the future of the site of RAF Bentley Priory risked a “crucial piece” of history being mothballed, and urged the Government to stump up the necessary funds.

Bentley Priory, in Stanmore, north London, was the headquarters of Fighter Command and played a pivotal role in the Battle of Britain in 1940.

The site, which closed in May last year, was bought by development company VSM Estates with the intention of converting the mansion into luxury apartments with a Battle of Britain education and heritage centre but this now looks in doubt.

Is this about Spitfires, the Battle of Britain or what? I know we have a local interest in Spitfires but if the article is talking about Fighter Command or even just the Battle of Britain then referring only to Spitfires, Spifire pilots and and no-one else does a massive disservice to the Hurricanes and their pilots who vastly outnumbered the Spitfire in the B of B, and then the many successor planes such as the Typhoon, the Tempest and even the Mustang amongh others which in total actually shot down a lot more German planes.
This is similar to the way the Americans airbrush everything else out of history to leave them looking like the only stars. Shameful reporting.

Agre, Andy. Any museum needs to cover all pilots and all nationalitiesinvolve
d.
Then again, do we really need a museum dedicated to a fairly short and specific period of WW2? The RAF museums cover this very well already with the obvious attraction of the planes.
Personally I'd prefer the Govt to take a long hard look at how our history is taught to our children, and make them understand and be proud of what their ancestors achieved and not just in WW2.
