Saints legend Francis Benali is swapping two legs for two wheels as he joins in the Saints Foundation’s gruelling 160-mile Garmin Big Bike Challenge.

Francis is one of 43 people cycling from St Mary’s Stadium to Leicester City’s King Power Stadium, ahead of tomorrow’s Saints match there.

The ride, which was due to begin at 7am today, is being held in aid of the Saints Foundation – an independent charity associated with the club, which helps to support young people and vulnerable adults in the community.

It is the second major challenge Francis has undertaken in the last year, following his epic 1,000-mile Big Run in 2014, when he ran to all 20 Premier League grounds.

“I’m going from two legs to two wheels I suppose,” he said.

“The preparation hasn’t been as in-depth as for my run, though. I have done one bike ride so far, so it’s not ideal preparation.

“I’m going to be in a bit of pain I expect, but it will be worth it.

“I’m sure I’ll get through it and, unlike my Big Run, when I was effectively on my own, there is a big group of people doing this challenge too, so it will be nice to be part of that team.”

The riders, including people from the club, the foundation and also supporters, are due to cycle 100 miles today, stopping over in Banbury, before completing their journey tomorrow in time to cheer on Ronald Koeman’s side as they chase another three points in their battle for Europe.

Sponsors Garmin have agreed to match all fundraising up to £20,000.
