A Hampshire pensioner has told how he spends 90% of his time watching porn – including indecent images of children.

Now a judge has ordered the 80-year-old to crack down on his internet use and warned if he faces jail if he doesn’t stop.

It comes after John Bailey appeared at Southampton Crown Court where he admitted making indecent images of children, breaching a sexual harm prevention order and breaching a suspended sentence.

He was given a nine-month sentence suspended for two years, a 40-day rehabilitation requirement, a £500 fine and told he was allowed one item capable of accessing the internet – and that it must have monitoring software installed.

The court heard Bailey, of Hocombe Drive, Chandler’s Ford, was given a 12-month sentence suspended for two years last June for possessing indecent images of children.

He was also given a five-year sexual harm prevention order which would mean police would pay him surprise visits to inspect his devices.

Prosecuting, Richard Martin said officers attended Bailey’s address and found laptops or tablets capable of accessing the internet. He added that the internet history had been tampered with.

When the devices were examined, inspectors found Bailey had been accessing teenage pornography and had also looked at and downloaded indecent images of children, which fell into category B.

Mr Martin said the defendant had been searching terms like “young” pornography – involving children as young as ten years old. The court heard Bailey said he had a problem and spent 90% of his time on the internet looking at pornography.

Defending, Eve Shelley said Bailey now only used his TV to access legal porn and that his internet had been restricted at home.

She added the number of images found was significantly less than his original offence and if he was to go into custody there would be concern for his wife, who is also in her 80s.

Judge Gary Burrell said: “I am not going to sentence you to prison – this is your only chance. If it happens again you will go to prison, there will be not be any discretion.”
