A HAMPSHIRE mum has spoken of her daughter’s terror at almost being kidnapped as she walked home.

As reported yesterday, the ten-year-old girl was walking home from a neighbour’s house in Woodley Lane, Romsey when a man driving a bright yellow car pulled up behind her.

He called out to her to get into the car, and when she ran away continued to follow her down the road.

Her mum, who did not wish to be named, said: “She knew that this car was behind her and felt a bit weird. Then she heard him shouting: ‘You get in the car. You get in the car.’ “She was trying to get our gate open but she couldn’t do it straight away. She said she could hear him rustling around for something in the car but she did not turn around – she was very scared.

“It’s really upsetting, especially because she was only walking from five doors up – she had her hand on our gate when it happened.

“It makes me really angry.

She’s only ten, just beginning to start going out on her own. It isn’t right that these people are out there.”

The man was driving a distinctive yellow car, with a long flat bonnet, and had a high visibility jacket on the passenger seat beside him. The girl described him as aged around 40, white with short blond hair. He spoke with what the victim described as a ‘funny voice’ – possibly an accent.

Police are now investigating the incident and warning parents to take extra care to ensure their children are safe.

PC Bill Nye, who is investigating the incident, said: “This all happened within a very short distance of the girl’s home and not surprisingly she was left very shaken and frightened by what happened. But she took the right action by refusing to get in the car and getting away from the driver.”
