HAMPSHIRE police are being investigated over how they handled repeated reports of antisocial behaviour in a town where a man was beaten unconscious and left in a coma.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) says it will look at how claims of disturbances and trouble were investigated and managed by officers and how they interacted with local residents during May and August this year.
The review surrounds incidents reported in Garland Court, Forton Road, Gosport and follows a serious assault on 49-year-old Andrew Toseland who was savagely beaten in the block of flats, where his mum Nina lives
The attack happened on August 25, at around 12.15am. Andrew is still recovering from his injuries at Southampton General Hospital’s neurological unit where doctors were working to bring him out of the medically induced coma.
The IPCC has only just released details of their investigation although it began almost a week ago, on September 19.
A spokesman said that independent investigators have made contact with Andrew’s family to discuss their involvement.
Samuel Armstrong 18, of Sherwood Road in Gosport, has been charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent and actual bodily harm over the incident.
He was remanded in custody to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court on December 3. Six others were also arrested in connection with the attack and have been released on bail. Anyone with information should call Gosport CID on 101.
