Girl admits making up abduction claim in Redbridge area of Southampton
10:20am Thursday 4th October 2012 in Crime
Redbridge Community School, where the girl is a pupil
THE schoolgirl at the centre of an abduction claim in Southampton has admitted she made up the incident.
Thousands of worried parents were told to make special arrangements for getting their children to and from school after the 12-year-old told teachers and police a man had tried to force her into a van as she walked to Redbridge Community School last month.
Detectives cordoned off part of a nearby park and went door-to-door, as well as trawling through CCTV footage from the area as part of their urgent investigation, while school leaders beefed up patrols and sent texts and letters home to warn mums and dads.
But the girl, who said she had been approached by a man in a white Transit van near the Cuckmere Lane school on the morning of September 20, last night said she had lied about the whole thing.
Police today revealed a similar incident reported in Bursledon yesterday also proved to be completely false.
Detective Chief Inspector Pete McGowan said “considerable police resources” had been invested to investigate the Redbridge allegation, “which raised unnecessary alarm and concerns within the local community”, and resulted in officers being taken away from investigating other crimes.
He said: “Whenever an allegation is made, rumour quickly spreads within the local community and quite understandably people become anxious, especially when the word 'abduction' is used.
“This in turn could create hysteria which leads to an increase in reporting.
“Also, placing and passing on unconfirmed rumour, especially through social networks like Facebook only heightens the problem and causes increased concern within the neighbourhood and local school communities.
“We would therefore strongly urge people not to engage in this practice.
“Rest assured that the police will always pro-actively release information to the public through the media and social network sites if and when an incident has occurred.
“The girl now realises that what she did was wrong and has shown regret and remorse and no further action will be taken on this occasion.
“However, making any false or malicious claim to the police is a very serious offence and can result in the person being arrested.”

I do not want to lay the blame at their doorstep, but I would like to know why ?
Is it peer pressure to draw attention to themselves, or is it a cry for help ?
Either way, I hope they get the help they obviously need.
Very sad to see.

The girls should spend a night in the cells to teach them a lesson!

Her parents should foot the bill for the policing costs. What a waste of time!

Maybe she should spend a day with the Police to help her learn from this mistake.

the best way to deal with this is to give her a hundred lines as to why she should not waste police and community time. This to be done AFTER a full investigation as to WHY. She has to learn that becuase of her action and that of another is the reason why when a girl say's something nothing is done in an instant.
Its nice to know there are some out there with a bit of common sense.
Not just the "lock her up" brigade.

When I was at school I made stuff up to draw attention to myself because I was being physchologically by my peers (and to some extent my teachers)... before you hang her, perhaps she could speak to a therapist and find out what is going on at home or in school... I think this could be a serious cry for help, or I could be totally wrong... a friend could have 'dared' her to do it!

I had a friend who got arrested for sexual assault in Shirley three other men were also bought in for questioning.
the 15 year old had shouted rape to her boyfriend & pointed the finger at some one she knew was drunk & wouldn't have a great recollection of walking home that night.
it came out that she had sex with another man who'd given her a love bite & her boyfriend went mad so she made up the rape story.
once arrested for a sex crime it stays on you're record.
if a man has been arrested even if he's allowed to go after proving his innocence once charged with assaulting a minor he's categorised as a risk yo children & will stay on the sexual predator register even though innocent & this could cost him his present or future job prospects.
so only a twelve year old?
look back in history at the witch burnings & it tells us children accused the woman who were burnt so age is no excuse

Being an actual rape victim myself at the age of 13 I know how it feels, so to lie about such a serious crime is stupid. I have always taught my daughter the boy who cried wolf tale, as there is a useful moral in there.

The girl obviously has some issues, and prison is not the answer for this. However like someone mentioned before once a person is accused of such a crime it is logged on their file for life, she should have a log on her file that states she is a liar, just in case she does something similar later on.

It was only because a local lad admitted to it the squaddie was released but bang went his promotion & it was on his files for ever even though he's innocent.
