RESIDENTS campaigning to move a crossover railway point away from their homes have had the backing of their MP.

Eastleigh MP Mims Davies has showed her support for residents in Netley and collected their petition calling on Network Rail to reconsider moving a crossover point away from their homes as they are plagued with unbearable train noise.

The crossover, that allows a train to move on to another track, is behind the home of Lynn Welsh and her neighbours in Kelvin Grove.

The problem has been a cause of constant stress for residents in the area over the last year because of a diversion of rail traffic along the line because of maintenance work further into Southampton.

This has meant more trains and an increase in both noise and vibration from the early hours to late into the evening.

The MP is now planning to hand the petition to Network Rail and ask them to look into moving the crossover or undertaking further remedial work that residents believe they need so they can get some peace.

Ms Davies said: “This is a very unpleasant situation for the people living near the crossover.

“I understand that Network Rail has completed remedial work to the crossover but this has simply not improved the situation even though the operator has said it’s working within acceptable standards.

“I will be asking whether more can be done when I hand in the petition to them, although I accept it may be too much to move the crossover as the cost is estimated at £600,000.”
