SUPERMARKET chain Lidl has launched a bid to build a store in Hampshire that could create up to 40 jobs.

The project has been backed by a 4.300-signature petition of support from people living nearby, and would be built on land at Castle Trading Estate, Portchester.

Lidl say the 1,506 sq m shop would have five full-time staff and 35 part-time staff and supporters say it would rejuvenate the area, give more choice to shoppers, and provide employment.

A Lidl questionnaire found that 90 per cent of the 3,533 people surveyed were in favour of the project going ahead, while six per cent were against it and four per cent were undecided.

The company has submitted a planning application to Fareham Borough Council with a decision expected to be given by March 20.

The site was used by Homewoods Interiors and included an industrial unit that was recently demolished. Lidl plans to construct a new single-story store. It would also include a 70-bay car park.

A Lidl spokeswoman said: “We are thrilled to have received such a fantastic response from the local residents of Portchester.”
