A MAJOR fundraising event is being held today in aid of a schoolboy sports star critically injured in an accident outside his Hampshire home.

Hundreds of people are taking part in a fun run to help 11-year-old Felix Barrow, who was left fighting for his life following the collision on October 7 last year.

Felix was on his way to Swanmore College when he was hit by a Toyota Yaris just yards from his front door.

The avid sports lover qualified for Team GB’s under 13s biathlon team at the age of ten 10 and is a member of several running, swimming and cycling clubs across the county.

But he suffered devastating injuries in the accident, including a fractured skull and other broken bones.

After being airlifted to Southampton General Hospital, he spent four weeks in the paediatric intensive care unit, followed by a month on a high-dependency ward.

His parents, Stuart and Vanessa Barrow, of Hill Pound, Swanmore, were warned he might never walk again.

They launched the Fit for Felix campaign to fund any day-to-day care he will need when he leaves hospital, including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, speech therapy and counselling.

But he the schoolboy is making good progress after more than three months of intensive treatment.

As reported in the Daily Echo, he is now able to take a few tentative steps with the help of physiotherapists and is determined to get back on his feet.

Felix is due to leave hospital for the first time next weekend and will spend at least one night at the family home.

His father said: “Felix is doing well. He has yet to regain his speech but can now take five steps without anyone holding him upright.

“I think a complete recovery is asking too much but we’re hoping for a good recovery.”

Two-thirds of the money raised by Fit for Felix will go to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance and the paediatric intensive care unit.

Today’s three-kilometre 3km fun run will be held at Hundred Acre Wood in the Forest of Bere, near Wickham, with runners setting off at 9.10am.
