THOUSANDS lined the streets as the equine community cantered into Wickham for the biggest and oldest horse fair in the country.

Crowds flocked to the usually quiet village to soak up the atmosphere at the traditional event, which dates back some 800 years.

Horse lovers gather annually to swap secrets, meet with friends and parade their cherished animals in one of just two major horse-trading events in the country.

Police officers were on hand to ensure the fair passed off smoothly while roads through the village were closed off for most of the day.

Last night a police spokesman said there had been no repeat performance of the bare knuckle fighting marring 2009’s celebrations.
