A HAMPSHIRE academic has been awarded the prestigious Merchant Navy Medal for his work helping keep seafarers safe.
Professor Mike Barnett, the head of maritime research at Southampton Solent University, has received the honour in recognition of his work leading an internationall y - a c c l a i m e d research project studying watch-keeping fatigue.
P r o j e c t Horizon, a joint venture between Solent’s Warsash M a r i t i m e A c a d e m y , Swedish acad e m i c s a n d researchers and other companies and authorities, analysed experienced watchkeepers’ use of ships’ bridge, engine and liquid cargo handling simulators to improve understanding of tiredness at sea.
The Merchant Navy Medal, established in 2005, is a prestigious annual award recognising acts of courage afloat or commendable service within the merchant navy or fishing fleet.
Professor Barnett received the award from Admiral The Right Honourable Lord West of Spithead, the university’s chancellor, at a ceremony in London.
