A WOMAN'S body has been found in a Hampshire river, prompting a police investigation.

Detectives in the New Forest are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found this morning in a river near the Balmer Lawn Hotel, Lyndhurst Road, Brockenhurst.

Police were called to the scene at 9.14am Wednesday, June 5, by a 37-year-old Aldershot man who found the body.

A large white screen was erected next to a bridge over the Lymington River, to shield the scene from passers-by.

Police took photographs of the scene before covering the woman's body with sheets and blankets as they continued their investigation into her death.

Firefighters and the ambulance service were also at the scene.

Police investigating the death said they are not treating it as suspicious, following their preliminary investigations.

The woman is described as white and middle aged with short dark hair.

A red jacket and a pair of black flat women’s shoes were found on the river bank.

Officers say they are continuing their efforts to identify the woman.

One woman living near the scene said: "I did the school run and went for a ride on my horse. The ambulances and police cars were there when I got back.

"It's very sad."
