WITNESSES say they saw a man sobbing near a woman's body lying dead in a New Forest field which is at the heart of a murder investigation.

The woman – who has yet to be formally identified – was found shortly before 5pm on Tuesday in a field opposite Leygreen Farm.

Last night officers launched a murder inquiry after revealing they are treating her death as suspicious.

Hampshire police’s Major Investigation Team is trying to establish how the woman died and are awaiting results from a post-mortem which was being carried out last night by a Home Office pathologist.

Officers are continuing to contact the woman’s next of kin.

Daily Echo:

Detective Superintendent Paul Barton said: “We are treating the discovery of a woman’s body in Beaulieu as murder.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area between 2pm and 5pm on Tuesday to contact us.”

He added: “We will be increasing our patrols in the area but I want to remind the community that crimes of this nature are extremely rare.”

Police believe the woman was tending her horse before she died and are urging witnesses to come forward.

Reports locally suggested she had been found by her husband.

Officers taped off the field and guarded the opposite farm building throughout yesterday.

A white and yellow tent was put up at the spot where she was found while forensics officers and sniffer dogs arrived at the site.

Daily Echo:

Police searched the hedgerows for clues and carried out door-to-door inquiries.

The discovery has shocked villagers living nearby in the quiet farming community.

A 42-year-old man saw emergency services arriving when he returned from feeding horses in a neighbouring field.

He said: “We saw three police cars there and then two ambulances racing past.

“We thought maybe someone had been injured on a horse but then we saw a man extremely distressed.

“He was sobbing his heart out on the ground and I realised something bad must have happened.

“It’s really worrying because whatever’s happened it’s someone’s child.”

A 38-year-old woman added: “There have been forensics there most of the time in their white kits.

“It plays on your mind because I often come here alone. It’s concerning because it’s happened so close.”

Witnesses should contact the Major Investigation Team on 101 quoting Operation Biscotti or leave information anonymously by ringing the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.

Condolences to her family. I hope the police catch them.

On your comment that it does not matter well this is from the article.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who was in the area of Lyndhurst Road, Beaulieu yesterday, Tuesday 2nd September between 2pm and 5pm to contact us.

We'll considering it is Brockenhurst, it does matter as a potential key witness might think, " we'll I was in Brock so did not witness a murder or the murderer leaving the scene in beaulieu" and the police will need witness however trivial it may seem to someone to step forward. They need to know where it happened.

Maybe the story needs changing as Cyrus has corrected them.

Condolences to this poor woman's family, such sad awful & frightening news. This is in Beaulieu Village not Brockenhurst just up the road from where I live. It is the road from Beaulieu to Lyndhurst (Beaulieu end), just pass the motor museum entrance heading to Lyndhurst. The correct info is important to help find any potential witnesses.

If you follow Beaulieu Road from Ipley crossroads, it becomes North Lane and then joins Hatchett Lane (B3056) at the 'T' junction. If you don't turn on to the B3056 you'll drive in to Leygreen Farm which is actually seven miles from Brockenhurst. The name Brockenhurst appears to have confused you but it is the nearest town for postal purposes.

If the DE had given the right location at the time it would have stopped all this. The idea is if anybody was in the area at the time then it would be helpful to the police. No point in saying it was seven miles away. It is not a map reading lesson it is journalists who don't get there facts right. Which happens many times on the DE.

All those getting on their High horse about the Location can go do one.
This story was reported with a location attached specifically given so that people in the correct area who may have seen something can then come forward with information. The fact the location information was wrong or should we say vague defeated the purpose.
Mentioning an error about the location was in no way meant as disrespectful to the deceased but it was meant to point it out so the Echo could maybe correct the mistake. The facts is this was in Beaulieu not Brockenhurst and its in Hatchet lane not Lyndhurst road.
I have no idea why this is such a big deal for some backward people when the post was made to make sure their was some clarification for potential witnesses. I don't get how people think that stating an error in the information is somehow being out of line.
It is very sad and condolences to all who knew this lady.
Next time I think ill just ring the echo for something as important as this lesson learned.

In the latest article the paper are continuing to mistakenly put the crime scene on Lydhurst Rd when it is infact 7 miles away from Lyndhurst Rd. As mentilned this could confuse many potential witneses. The mistake is likely caused by the fact that the Lygreen farm B+B website itself incorectly states it is on Lyndhurst Rd, Beaulieu. But Lyndhurst Rd doesn't go anywhere near Beaulieu. Their stated postcode is correct so I'm assuming guests would use that to get there as the won't get within 7 miles if they drive along Lyndhurst Rd. Just to reinterate, the farm and crime scene are just round the bend from the entrance to the Motor Museum.

The paper is also now mistakenly calling the farm 'Leytree' farm instead of Leygreen.
