A HAMPSHIRE rower and his fellow adventurer have completed a gruelling 4,300-mile trek across the Atlantic Ocean.

Lawrence Walters, originally from Lymington, and his teammate Tom Rainey faced a deadly hurricane, monster waves and hallucinations, and were even worried that their food supplies would run out.

But 93 days after setting off from Battery Park in New York the daredevil pair finally have solid ground under their feet after landing at Salcombe, Devon.

They were not able to achieve the speed record for the route but nonetheless earned Guinness World Records for being the youngest team to complete the route and for covering the greatest distance by an ocean row boat in 24 hours.

Visibly emotional, they exchanged a hug and high fives before a happy reunion with friends and family on the shore.

An Ocean Valour spokesman told the Daily Echo: “It’s absolutely incredible down here and there must be about 500 people lining the shores.

“There’s more than 100 boats of all different shapes and sizes who were awaiting them coming into the harbour.

“Their families are beside themselves and it’s turned into a bigger event than we could have possibly imagined. You can see that they’re very emotional watching this arrival.”

The idea for the row came about when Tom decided to take on a challenge to honour the memory of his late father Luke, who died from a brain tumour in 2012.

They have raised money for the Brain Tumour Charity and to date have amassed more than £53,000.
