IT IS one of the best-known vehicles in cinema history.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is the famous flying car that transports eccentric inventor Caractacus Potts and his children to Vulgaria, a distant kingdom ruled by the evil Baron Bomburst.

Now a replica of the car is set to wow visitors to the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, after making its debut at the annual village fete.

Built by Chitty fan Gordon Grant the impressive machine will be driven around the attraction during the school holidays, providing the perfect photo opportunity for fans.

The fete was held in the grounds of Palace House, ancestral home of the Montagu family.

With Lord Montagu at the wheel, Chitty was used to transport guest celebrity Stefan Booth to the historic stately home, where the former EastEnders actor performed the opening ceremony.

The fete raised more than £10,000, which will be shared between Beaulieu Abbey Church and several village clubs and organisations.

Entertainment was provided by the Beaulieu Band and a group of strolling singers called the Beaulieu Warblers. Children from the village school staged a display of maypole dancing, while the annual “Dog & Owner” competition proved as popular as ever.

Other attractions included pony rides, an assault course and a treasure trail.
