HOLIDAYMAKERS at the campsite at the centre of a murder investigation have reported hearing screams of a woman in the early hours of this morning.

Families staying at the Holmsley camp, where a six-year-old girl was found seriously ill and later died, were woken by the screams of a woman at around 12.30am.

This was shortly followed by someone repeatedly sounding a car horn, before the arrival of several police vehicles.

The campsite, in the New Forest, is still cordoned off as officers continue their investigation into the suspicious death of the youngster.

The youngster had been staying in a family-sized dark blue tent with a black rim around the base, which had been pitched away from other campers, with cars parked close by.

Shortly after 1.45pm, officers started putting a large cordon around the tent and several police vehicles surrounded the area.

Two forensice officers in white suits are now within the inner cordon surrounding the tent.

The campsite has been closed for business and all bookings are being diverted to the Hollands Wood campsite in Brockenhurst.

Speaking at the scene, Sergeant Heather McNicol, based in Lymington, said: “We are investigating what may be a suspicious death.

“There’s a long way to go before we will know if there has been any foul play.

“We are trying to reassure people that we don’t think anyone else at the campsite is at risk.

“If we did, we would evacuate the site.”

A 30-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, both from Gosport, have been arrested on suspicion of murder.
