Southampton City Council's chief executive Alistair Neill resigns from post

Alistair Neill Alistair Neill

THE chief executive of Southampton City Council has resigned from his £165,000 post.

Alistair Neill is quitting for a lower-paid role as chief of Herefordshire County Council, which is closer to his family home in Wales.

He said he will leave in March after two-and-a-half years with “some fantastic memories of both a great city and a great team of people in the council”.

Mr Neill said he had faced the “most challenging period” in the council’s history, having to cut costs by £85m and make “very hard decisions” to redesign the council and its services.

He paid tribute to “tremendously talented and dedicated colleagues right across the organisation”.

Highlights of his time included construction of the award-wining SeaCity Museum but he said the tragic shootings on board HMS Astute a year-and-a-half ago would also be a “prominent memory”. Mr Neill helped tackle a gunman on the nuclear submarine who killed his commander.

He joined Southampton council from Welsh authority Merthyr Tydfil, having previously held senior leadership roles in blue chip private sector companies such as Unilever and BP.

Council leader Cllr Richard Williams said: “I am really sorry to be losing Alistair. Over the past two years he has dealt with a vast amount of challenging and huge issues with firstrate professionalism. He will be a hard act to follow.”

Cllr Williams said he would not rule out a shared chief executive to cut costs.

Former council leader Cllr Royston Smith added Mr Neill had done a “tremendous job” and shown he was a “great appointment.”

Before all the 'gloom and doom' merchants come on here, I would like to congratulate Alistair on his new appointment.

Really nice bloke who undertook a very challenging job at Southampton with the seismic budget reductions facing the council. A real professional.

Ah, but you have something else to play with, although having £3,000 a week to play with does not make you go blind.

Like with anything Southy.... you get what you pay for ! People that are qualified to the job get the wages to go along with it..... why would some want that position on 30K a year when they can get 100K+ in the private sector for a similar role ?

It's no wonder no-one takes you seriously anymore ! well I say anymore as I am not too sure anyone every did anyway.

Just because they demand a high pay do not mean you get the best, often the best will do jobs like this on a normal working class wage, because they love that job and want to do it, where as you offer or high paid jobs like this, its not the love of the job or the enjoyment of doing the job, its more of a case of greed for money and power.
So yes your right you will get what you pay for, people who can not really do the job, but have the greed for money and power.

Southy is right here, people who think they are worth £100,000+ salaries are the problem, there arroganc and sense of self entitlement is what is bringing this country to its knees, look at the city where a load of aggressive, sociopathic cocaine riddled idiots run the financial services industry.
Few jobs in this country should justify such a % over the average wage.

What do you say, for example about the I.T. Computer Contractors who earn anything from £1500 per week to £5000 per week? Or the Union Bosses who earn in excess of £100,000 per year together with inflated Pensions, special allowances etc etc. Or the clever Plumbers and Electricians who can bring in £100,000+ a year? Anyone with a skill that is in demand will be paid the market rate - the market drives the rate. You may not accept it but there are a lot of people out there across many jobs who earn well over the average wage. In theory, and usually in practice, the best people work their way to the top and get the reward for doing so.

If you invest in yourself through education or training together with hard work then you can expect to earn more - the choice is yours.

This man has simply used Souithampton for his own ends. He has never moved home from his house in Abergavenny and never intended to. He was using Southampton as a stepping stone whilst he waited for a nice little earner to come up nearer to home.

Incidentially, I have no time for Royston Smith's politics, but he was the hero on that sub Neil joined in when the job was done.

Not just the financial services industry, Councillors, MP's and Lords in government all are there now just for the greed of money and power, (professional Politicians) we had 100 times better councillors when they use to the job for nothing, and only claimed for bus fares, or taxis if finished very late after the bus service stop for the night.

Lets face it SCC is in a mess due to years of mis-management.
A shared appointment with another Local Authority seems to be the way to go and has been successful in other areas.
Just make sure you don't go anywhere near Hampshire CC eg. Ken Thornber etc...

Yes, let's curse anyone who has worked hard to get where they are, they are obviously demons who need to be brought down a peg or two.

Of course, it only makes sense that someone who empties bins for a living, as much as that service is needed, is paid the same as a brain surgeon who probably saves lives on a daily basis, has £1000's of debt from funding an education to get where they are.

Shame on them, shame on us for letting them get away with it. I mean, who do they think they are?

38 Trade Union general secretaries and chief executives received remuneration of more than £100,000 in 2010-11 (37 in 2009-10).

I'm guessing you don't have the same contempt for them.

And which union do you belong to? I think its down to union members who pay their subscription fees to decide how much their representatives should be paid.

I recently cancelled my insurance policy with Liverpool Victoria 'mutual' when I discovered how much the Managing Director was being paid (£1 million + p.a.) and how my 'vote' could do nothing to change things.

I'm confident that Southampton City Council could attract a suitably qualified local (sic) chief executive officer at little more than the salary we pay our MPs.

If you want the truth on what they earn, then you need to go to Union house, where all the wages can be seen out of the accounts books, and it is nothing like your saying, and to get the real facts on what they earn you will need to go there, its not publish on the internet, and you can see also the full amount of tax is paid also, unlike the bosses who some earn well over £1 milliom a year, and get away with paying 20% tax or less.

on two of them I'd agree with you.
Police Officers & nurses but not with Bin men.Only the drivers who have to have an HGV licence would either take time or be hard to replace.
I've worked with M/C that does exactly the same as the bin emptier so with out knocking the Refuse collectors they could be replaced.
As for MP's unless we had an election no one in our democracy could just walk in & do their jobs.
I also believe they can't strike can they?
As for Councillors yes your dead right look at Liverpool where the Labour Government abolished the then run Labour council & took over the running of that council?
Thank you for giving me some credit I did n't realise this was aimed at me but I hope my response was okay?

Loosehead. Im afraid on this occasion when faced with a logical issue that beats up your believes, you turn into southy... you have not commented on my hypothesis or came up with a counter argument.

But thats ok. You are only human and I still think you are an inteligent guy looking at your posts.

Any believe based system, be that based in religion or politics is very dangerous. Belief overcomes logic.
Subject48 .....I really must take you task on this post of yours.
.
Only Southy turns into Southy.
.
Your second paragraph about looserhead being human and intelligent .. is pushing the bounds of exageration and gross misrepresentation far too far.
.
I suggest that you retract your second paragraph forwith or offer an unconditional aplogy to all other posters
I suggest you keep your opinions to yourself or are you such a loud mouth you just can't keep it shut?
Thats the idea of the forum ......... To post your opinions

Can someone please let me know how many days a week the CX travelled from Welsh Wales to work in Southampton. Going by the sheep posting on this site I'm surprised he has given the job up.

In 2010 /11:-

Derek Simpson Unite the Union
£510,659

Dave Prentis Unison £131,496

Bob Crow RMT £123,833 (still lives in social housing)

Matt Wrack Fire Brigades Union £120,174

Christine Blower NUT £116,836

Mark Serwotka PCSU £113,354

Yep, in this case I totally agree:

'there arrogance and sense of self entitlement is what is bringing this country to its knees'.

Spot on.

Aren't you the idiot then !!

CXs are extraordinary people and don’t fall out of trees. They are management controllers. They know everything and everybody in their business and use the knowledge to control everything. They have loyal staff lieutenants in every section – not to snoop but to check and report on everything going on everywhere. There is no secret about these informers, they are the supervisors, specialists and progress chasers that we all have around us. There could be hundreds of them – all with their own essential tasks but with special access to the CX at any time. It takes 1/2 a year to set up this web of trusted people and it's done with un-patronising charm and encouragement that is natural to leaders. Reports are exact and regular, and the comments are methodically collated on planning charts of everything that should be done, tomorrow, this week, this month and this year. The charts throw up every anomaly in need of a fix and department heads are dispatched to fix them. Have-a-go-Joe has got no chance of doing the job, no matter how smart and determined he might be.

Less 45% tax more like 1400 a week, not a lot really for the big cheese.

Really nice bloke who undertook a very challenging job at Southampton with the seismic budget reductions facing the council. A real professional.

Lisa I get attacked all the time by certain left wing posters on here so can I ask you to look back in reflection at the Tory councils approach to saving money whilst trying to save jobs at the same time & what's now happening with todays council & the Unions approach to it?
I'd like to hear from a neutral as I'm told I'm a blinkered ( mild cuss) tory .

George 4 i asked you before to stop parroting 'the market' at me.
As a theory its lovely, Adam Smith was bang on, however in reality as much as communism is flawed in reality so are liberal free markets.
Celebrities, politicians, CEO's, bankers, lawyers, footballers are not reflecting market rates, but rates manipulated and fixed behind closed doors with no method of market correction. CAPITALISM = MONOPOLY

I think you will find, if you did your research properly, that Alistair Neill was offered this job after years of working to get to the top, then gaining experience at his position and being the best man for the job.

I think you will find that they are both equally hero's however alistair neill did not pander after media attention
