A MAN was rescued from a burning house in Southampton.

The blaze happened at a house in Clovelly Road in St Mary's and saw the man led to safety by firefighters.

Around 12 firefighters from St Mary's and Redbridge used one hose reel, one jet and two sets of breathing apparatus to tackle the fire.

The 999 call was received at 8.09pm on Sunday evening and the stop message was at 8.54pm.

A small crowd of residents gathered to watch the drama unfold.

One resident living opposite the home said: "Firefighters led a man out of the house and he was choking and in a bad way. They had to put him in an oxygen mask."

She added that police were at the scene and kept people away from the house where the fire happened.

Another resident in Clovelly Road saw the commotion and said:"I came outside when it was in full swing, I could see two fire engines and the police were there too.

"The water pumps were on but i think the fire was at the back of the property.

The Daily Echo understands that the fire broke out in the kitchen of the house.

Owner of St Mary's supermarket Mike Lakhani was working at the time and said the man rescued was a regular customer.

Mr Lakhani said:"He often comes in here and I have heard he is fine.

"I could hear the fire engines go around the corner and like anything I went to have a look and there was a small crowd of people gathered outside."
