A PROMINENT former pub in Southampton could be knocked down and turned into houses.

Plans to tear down the King George on the corner of Oakley Road and King’s George Avenue have been filed with the city council.

Developer Witchampton Developments Ltd, which has bought the site, has filed plans to replace the pub with six three-bed houses.

The town houses would be set up in two rows of terraces alongside seven car parking spaces and 12 secure cycle spaces.

In their application the firm said: “the proposed development can be seen to respect and enhance the context of the area by reinforcing the corner plot’s relationship with the local context whilst having no adverse visual impacton the existing skyline or the immediate neighbours”.

The pub was one of the best-known watering holes in the area but closed its doors several months ago and has been boarded up ever since.

Planning chiefs are set to make a decision by September 29.
