IT IS the final countdown towards the return of one of the South Coast’s biggest and most hotly anticipated mass running events.

All eyes will be on Southampton in four days time when thousands of runners limber up for the ABP Southampton Half Marathon this weekend.

Crowds of more than 20,000 people are expected to descend on the city to welcome more 8,000 runners competing in four action-packed races showcasing the region’s sporting pride and the city’s iconic landmarks.

Now sporting chiefs and civic leaders have launched a rallying call for Sotonians to do their city proud by turning out in their droves to support the sequel event they promise will be even "bigger and better” than its predecessor.

It comes as the blue touch paper was lit at the weekend when a record number of runners flocked to Southampton park run – with 867 people completing the 5km route at Southampton Common organised entirely by volunteers.

The Southampton Half is taking place over two days from Saturday [April 23] and is destined to ignite the city’s love of sport once more.

It is organised by Marafun UK and Associated British Ports (ABP) are returning as prime sponsors.

The main event is on Sunday, April 24 – the same day as the London Marathon – and takes in some of the city’s most famous sites including the Bargate, the QE2 Anchor and St Mary’s Stadium during the 13.1 mile route before finishing back at the Guildhall Square.

The previous day hundreds of families are taking part in the schools challenge and family fun run.

Scores of charities and community groups are are serving as ABP Milemakers – manning water stations and providing entertainment to cheer the runners on.

Organisers hope to top the £125,000 raised for good causes last year.

Marafun UK managing director Chris Rees said: “We are excitedly counting down to the big day. Last year’s event was so well received and there was a real buzz of excitement as residents came out to cheer loved ones and strangers alike.

“We are looking to get even more spectators out on the route and to cheer the runners on. There is more music and entertainment on the route and some celebrities amongst the runners to keep a look out for. Both running and spectating is going to be a great fun day for the city.”

Southampton City Council cabinet member for leisure Satvir Kaur, who is herself running the sister 10km route, said: “It’s fantastic for the city and it is going to be bigger and better this year. There are people from all walks of life and backgrounds taking part and we want as many people to get out there and support it.”
