A HAMPSHIRE man who died after being hit by a car had stepped out in front of a green traffic light, an inquest heard.

Jakub Seniuk, pictured, from Southampton was hit by a black BMW on The Avenue in Southampton, near the law courts, Winchester Coroner’s Court heard.

The 29-year-old, of Bellevue Terrace, was taken to hospital following the incident at around 4.15pm on December 2 last year.

Mr Seniuk, who was born in Poland, died the following day.

Lizzie Lewis, who was cycling past when the collision occurred, said: “There was no chance of the black car seeing the man due to the height of the car container next to him.

“He (Mr Seniuk) was moving and he eventually came to and tried to get up. We told him to sit still. His whole body had cartwheeled.”

Witness Steven Willis, who was driving by, said: “I saw this guy, as he got to the road he started to sprint.”

Dr Foria of Southampton General Hospital told the inquest that Mr Seniuk had an operation to remove his spleen in hospital in an attempt to stop his internal bleeding, but that he suffered a traumatic brain injury.

He gave a cause of death as multiple injuries, and added: “It would have been very difficult for him to survive following these injuries.”

Zino Djebbar, the driver of the BMW, said: “He came out of nowhere. I slammed the brakes. I could see that he was as surprised as I was.”

PC Clifford of Hampshire Constabulary said that Mr Djebbar was not travelling above the speed limit and he described the collision as, “unavoidable.”

“I don’t think either of them would have seen each other until the very last minute,” he said.

He also confirmed that alcohol may have been a factor in Mr Seniuk’s decision to run across the road.

Assistant coroner Sarah Whitby recorded a conclusion of a road traffic collision.
