A MAN who smashed a brandy bottle over the head of another man before ordering him to strip to his underpants as a form of humiliation has been jailed for six years.

Mohammed Afzal, pictured, was waiting in the corridor on the 11th floor of a block of flats for his victim, who had been told to come there because there was a party taking place.

But after being brought up in the lift, the victim found himself confronted by Afzal, 20, and a group of his friends before suffering the blow to the back of his head.

Southampton Crown Court heard how the bottle smashed, leaving a cut that required stitches at hospital, but the assault did not end there.

A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, began punching him in the face while Afzal ordered him to remove all his clothes gradually.

The victim was then made to beg to be set free and told to kiss Afzal’s feet before they let him go.

Judge Gary Burrell QC said he believed the assault was recorded on a mobile phone, although it had been denied.

The court was told how the attack, in Sturminster House, Millbrook, on February 19 this year, followed violence earlier in the evening outside Tesco in Tebourba Way, at which the victim had been present.

Afzal, of Bourne Avenue, Southampton, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The youth involved, who lives in Millbrook, pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful wounding.

Mitigating for Afzal, John Swain said his client had “a serious problem with drink” aggravated by the death of a close friend.

Defending the youth, Jamie Parker told the court his client lived in an area known for misbehaving youths but he was “a young man with potential”.

Sentencing Afzal to six years in prison, Judge Burrell said: “It was in my judgement a cowardly and deeply humiliating attack.”

Handing the teenager a youth rehabilitation order, Judge Burrell said he was most likely responsible for the bruising and swelling to the victim’s face.

He was also given a curfew, by means of an electronic tag, lasting 18 months that stops him from going out between 8pm and 7am and told he could not approach the victim.
