Southampton councillors split with leaders over future of Oaklands Swimming pool
4:30am Thursday 5th July 2012 in Southampton
By Matt Smith, Politics and business reporter
Oaklands
A TRIO of Labour councillors in Southampton have split with party leaders to launch a battle to save Oaklands Swimming Pool from closure.
The Labour administration announced on Monday they wanted to shut the loss-making pool – popular with children, older and disabled residents – as part of a mini-budget to further cut costs.
Three Coxford ward councillors – former Cabinet member Keith Morrell, Don Thomas and Sally Spicer – said they had a duty to fight the closure on behalf of residents who elected them.
They also want to save the jobs of 30 staff at risk.
Community asset Cllr Morrell, who controversially resigned two weeks into his job as efficiency tsar in protest at looming cuts, said: “The pool is a tremendous community asset and we will demonstrate to the Cabinet just how much it means to local people.”
Cllr Thomas said: “Whilst we all recognise that this Tory-led Coalition government has slashed our funding, trying to force local authorities into dismantling local government, with leisure facilities such as Oaklands first in line, we must resist.”
Cllr Spicer added: “As a newly-elected councillor I will move heaven and earth to keep Oaklands pool open.”
The councillors accused the previous Conservative administration of starving the pool of investment and called upon the Labour Cabinet to retain its staff and complete stalled repairs to reopen the pool, which was shut in May, as soon as possible.
They called for a marketing drive to increase usage and improve revenue. It requires a subsidy of £235,000 a year.
Tory leisure spokesman councillor John Hannides has tabled a council motion deploring the closure and has demanded investment in the pool for it to be reopened.
Tory group leader Royston Smith welcomed the Labour councillors decision to join the campaign.
“This shows not only is the leader of the council out of touch with the public, he’s even out of touch with his own back benchers,” he said.
He called on Unison, the union which represents leisure staff, to also back the campaign.
Unison branch secretary Mike Tucker slammed as “totally inadequate” a lack of consultation on the pool closure. He said unions would be raising their concerns at a meeting today to discuss a possible deal to end industrial action over staff pay cuts brought in by the Tories last July.
Council leisure boss councillor Warwick Payne, a former Oaklands Community School pupil, said he regretted the proposed closure but said it was in the “best interests of the city as a whole” when the council needed to make £30m of savings this year. He said the urgent repairs alone would cost £500,000.
Cllr Morrell’s resignation led to accusations council leader Richard Williams knowingly misled the public by stating his Cabinet member quit for health reasons when he was in fact fighting fit.
Cllr Morrell later said it was a “fiction” agreed with Cllr Williams to avoid a damaging public Cabinet split.
Cllr Williams, who survived a Tory motion of no confidence for bringing the council into disrepute, insists he was given no other reasons.
The decision to close the pool will be discussed at a special Cabinet meeting on Tuesday next week, and full council the following day.

Conservatives jumping on a bandwagon, Labour politicians thinking of themselves and no one willing to be honest and upfront.
.
What is clearly an economically unviable small asset (with other alternatives in the vicinity) will now be used as a political football and kicked around, not in the interests of the City's citizens, but in an infantile war of words by professional politicians.
.
Shame.

This City needs more than words and sideshows, and what will follow (by all sides) will show the City and local politics at its worst.

Conservatives were accused of going to shut this by these three Labour politicians when they were in opposition.
so please explain to me how they're jumping on the bandwagon?
David LLoyds you have to be a member of the club to use the facilities.
Shirley is down in Kentish Rd which is a bus fare so is going to be dearer& you can walk your child to this pool or they can walk across Shirley if your working your child ends up not being allowed to go is that fair?
Redlodge is a long way from 5Acres so would mean a car journey so no car no pool so once again where's these facility's?
Rapids has the same draw back for children who's parents work so sorry but you're wrong.
Labour has cut a service to pay/restore what looks like part of the council workers pay cut they have hit the disabled as well & I remember them attacking the Tory council over any cuts so why this garbage from you?

Spending your time on here and on Twitter is not the most efficient way of trying to reach out to your electorate and understanding why we lost so badly last May.

Until we face up to why we lost the trust of the residents of this City, why the campaign went so wrong (from top to bottom), why we were so focussed on "new technology" at the expense of grass roots interactions, we will merely be sniping from the opposition benches.

Tories are jumping on the anti-cuts bandwagon here. Fairly sure closure would have been quietly on the agenda if they couldn't find a private contractor to run it. RedLodge is community run, Shirley is private, why don't the politicians and community leaders work together to see if a solution can be found. It is shut for repairs at the moment so there is time. It is a good pool, used to be well used when my children were younger and is on many bus routes with no roads to cross for access. Bit of decent advertising might help.
Of course the land will be worth more for development if the pool isn't there.

Jumping on anti cuts bandwagon?
what do you think the industrial action has been about?(refuse collection)
The Tory council didn't want to make swinging cuts .
didn't want to have fortnightly collections with the loss of jobs that would incur they wanted to keep this pool they wanted to save as many services as possible so they looked at it,tried talking to the Unions about it.Then introduced pay cuts for any one over £17,500 starting at 2% going up to 5.5% they even changed & moved the starting point to £22,000.
how you can say the above is unbelievable

The simple facts are that it is economically unviable to keep subsidising this pool for such a low customer base (as I mentioned on an earlier post, it would probably be cheaper to provide everyone with a taxi to get to Shirley, than subsidise this outdated asset).

If there is the local appetite for this pool, then surely this should be an ideal opportunity for Cameron's "BIG SOCIETY" to kick in.

I'd imagine the Council would be amenable for a "Big Society" led community buy out.

You know as well as I do they stated from the beginning that 1,275 workers would go out of that figure 800 would be permanent staff the rest would be agency or temps. your beloved Labour party stated that all agency staff & all temps would go plus 1,500 permanent posts would go.
you also know that pay cuts were introduced to save money to save jobs & services.
You also know the tories had think tanks working on different ideas to save money & what you refer to was just one of those ideas which Councillor Smith said wasn't an option so why don't you try being honest for once or can't any Labour Party members/supporters be honest?

Moulton was looking into the option of getting David LLoyds to allow local children to use their pool & only there pool for a low figure/cost.
this would only take place if the pool became un economical to maintain.
as it was they found the money to repair it & keep it open.
I guess if you & your Labour fans had their way we would return to the days of having a plastic blue pool in the playground for children to learn to swim as we had in Foundry Lane ? ( I never learnt).
this is already a facility so why do you want to back a two faced lying Labour council & see it shut?

Congratulations to our 3 Councillors standing up for us that live in and around the Swimming pool fighting to save our pool. I have great memories of the place and hoping my little boy will learn to swim there too. It’s a shame the previous Tory Council let it run down and closed the leaning pool last year and did not repair the slide for over a year when it just needs a hinge fixing! And they allowed the pool to waste water for the past couple of years at a cost to us. Also why didn’t they build a new pool at the new school site? Surely the Tory led Council at the time should have told them to replace everything including the pool as Oaklands is a community school. We do not need more houses or what ever is going there, just community facilities that are in easy walking distance for those that don’t have a car or other transport like the elderly, disabled, young etc.

As member of Alan Whitehead's old team I am terribly disappointed that creation of which we in Old Labour were very proud, and which survived even Cllr. Smith's slaughter is now threatened by these arrogant disgraceful obnoxious and unprincipled NuLabourites, the traitors who have brought the good name of Labour into disrepute.
As seen at the last Council meeting these Dear Leader led NuLabour local councillors are even more arrogant than the right wing mob of Milliband in Parliament. They are so bad that they could endbup in making even Tory Posh boys appear loveable lads.
NuLabourites are moving so fast to the right that even Tory Smith could soon start appearing to be sane and sensible!
One of the greatest Leaders of India's struggle for freedom socialist Netaji used to say 'enemy of my enemy is a friend of mine'. On that basis I may be anti Tories but if they can be useful in saving this shameless NuLabour cut then i won't hesitate from appreciating their stand.
But as opponent of all cuts and their overall economic and social policies i will stick with my committment to Old Labour's socialist values, virtually all which have also been betrayed by Right-wingers of NuLabour.
Honesty in public office is important part of foundation of socialism. But these arrogant councillors, most of whom in last council meeting bragged that they can do whatever they like, appear to have forgotten that very basic principle.
Prince of Darkness Mandelson has made NuLabourites experts in con-tricks and taught them how to slither out of tight situations like snakes.
So I am naturally suspicious about the stand of our three Coxford ward councillors.
Considering if they were stupid enough to support this cruel cut in their own ward it could cook their political goose, and their Dear Leader has enough number of other sheep in the Chamber to blindly vote for this lunacy, I won't be surprised that this rebellion is simply state managed mirage.
The three muskteers should be bit honest and answer some simple questions:
Was the issue if this pool deliberately not mentioned during election so later on their party could say 'Ah we did not promise to save it' as arrogantly stated by clever wordsmith Simon Letts?
Is there any understanding within NuLabour Group or Party that for opportunist reasons they will do this drama and will be allowed to vote against this most unpopular cut in their ward without any threat of action by NuLabour Whip?
Will it not be hypocrisy if they behave like mercenaries by only opposing a cut in their own backyard BUT then go on supporting the same NuLabour Group when it will be going like blood thirsty vampire after the services or facilities in other areas and jobs of many workers?
Why are they not openly saying that their party and Dear Leader has not even an ounce compression for ordinary people and have shifted to even right of Tories, so to stay a socialist they are bidding good bye to Milliband led MOB and have started opposing all unnecessary cuts?

Oasis move out of the Oaklands building at the end of this month.
The plan ALWAYS was that the sites of the two school (Oaklands and Millbrook) would be sold for housing to cover the costs of the new build.
.
The Millbrook site has now found other (and commendable) use.
The Oaklands site is ONLY worth money if it can be cleared and sold as a whole.
.
Why not put a pool back in at Millbrook - where there is more space, where it can be used on a daily basis as well as by leisure users, and is further from the TVBC boundary?

You have completely ignored the report by the environment agency and defra, strangely enough there is no reference to EA tech on the three pages of reference material.
I am still waiting for you to give more details about the claim you made about vaccine damaged children, your evidence was…..’go and speak to a bloke who sometimes goes fishing at Redbridge’. There is a much longer list of ignorant ill-informed and completely wrong unsubstantiated claims, all of which make you a better candidate for the monster raving loony party, but you will have to do better to reach their level of success!

However I do disagree with some comments, they couldn’t even negotiate with the unions hence the legal bill, the roads and paths are in extremely bad condition across the city, selling off premises, Capita & romance contract, Swimming pool neglected, and social workers leaving to go to other authorities that then cost’s the Council double in employing agency workers and the list keeps going on. What’s worse labour is going down the same route.
In regards to £500k to repair a swimming pool, ummm must be a big swimming pool to fix! Something sounds a bit odd. While my older kid was learning to swim there the little pool was closed (under Tory led Council) and is still closed. That’s a fact!
Anyway, I’m not sure what party is best. People are losing interest in politics due to false promises and the hard working people are becoming worse off. Under this Government they tax and attack the poor while the rich get richer by paying less income tax and avoid paying capital tax.
Sorry, this is my last comment for a few months or so… x …some of us have to work and with a pay cut. (Basically we’re not going to agree on things)
…38 degrees member though.

Funny how the conservative council were facing up to the same shortfall but weren't shutting Oaklands Pool ?
The Tories have been out leafletting against this closure & now these Labour councillors come on side?
Were they getting worried?
Will the Unions agree this isn't the way to go & maybe the Tory way was best?
looks like we've jumped out of the frying pan into the fire voting this lot into power doesn't it?
