Fire in cell at Winchester Prison Fire in cell at Winchester Prison

FIRE crews were called to Winchester Prison last night after a blaze broke out in a prisoner's cell.

Three fire engines and 12 firefighters attended the scene.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We're not fully aware of how it started yet, but we believe the prisoner may have started it himself.”

An ambulance was also called to the incident at 10.30pm and one man was treated for light smoke inhalation, but was not taken to hospital.

It is understood the matter is not being pursued by police but will be dealt with internally by the prison service.

Prisoners are only allowed to smoke in their cells and non smokers cannot be forced to share with someone who smokes
