A WOMAN has died after a crash on the A272 near Winchester.

She was pronounced dead at the scene after her car collided with a lorry on the A272 bend near Cheesefoot Head at about 8.30am.

The lorry driver was treated for minor injuries and discharged at the scene.

A police spokesman at the scene said no arrests are likely to be made.

"The female driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene," he said. "Notifications are still being made to next of kin at this time."

Forensic work is still being done at the wreckage, he added.

"The debris field is quite big. It's everything you would expect from car and lorry debris."

Police hope to reopen the A272 in time for the "evening rush hour" at around 4 or 5pm.

The road is closed to through traffic coming from the A31 and A32.

The eastbound A272 is shut at its junction with the A31 at Chilcomb. Westbound traffic on the A272 is also being diverted off at Rodfield Lane onto the A31. Vehicles further east are being diverted off the A272 at New Cheriton.

It is the fourth fatality in the Cheesefoot Head area since 2001.
