A HAMPSHIRE woman died after she lost control of her car and smashed into an oncoming lorry, an inquest heard.

Rachel Lee was driving her blue Vauxhall Corsa along the A272 before her car swung out of control and hit an Iveco truck at Cheesefoot Head near Winchester.

The 24-year-old, of Stakes Hill Road in Waterlooville, was pronounced dead at the scene on October 7 as a result of “extensive head injuries”, according to consultant pathologist Dr Hayley Burnley.

The HGV driver, Glyn Hickson, said the car lost control at the bend as its end “just whipped out” and careered into his cab sideways before spinning upwards and then continuing the way it had been travelling.

“I thought I was going to lose my legs where it hit,” he said. “The only thing I can remember was I was pulling on my steering wheel and putting my foot on the brake.”

The scene at Cheesefoot Head near Winchester in October

PC Tracey Saunders, of the forensic collision investigation unit, said there was no evidence to suggest the Itchen Valley Montessori School employee had been speeding, using her phone or been distracted and had simply tried to overcompensate for the turn after she lost control of her car.

Senior coroner for central and south Hampshire, Grahame Short, recorded a verdict for accidental death.
