STAFF and students have celebrated the opening of a new research centre dedicated to sport and exercise at the University of Winchester.

The new hub promotes innovative research into sport science aiming to attract a high-calibre of specialists as well as acting as a focal point for studies.

Dr Stewart Cotterill, head of the department of sport and exercise, said: “Rather than concentrating on one particular sporting discipline, our work focuses on key research strands including sport and society, sporting performance, coaching and pedagogy, and the correlations between physical activity and health or wellbeing.

“The new centre offers an excellent opportunity to engage local, regional, national and international communities in high-quality impactful research that makes a real difference – not only to the sporting world but also to the global understanding of the complex issues surrounding health and wellbeing.

“The centre will provide a point of contact for external collaborators and develop a valuable network of associated staff.”
