HUMAN waste has been strewn across a Hampshire high street this morning after torrential rain led to manholes overflowing.

Pedestrians have been sidestepping sewage near the Buttercross in Winchester as downpours began to batter Hampshire.

One man described how they were "bubbling up like a fountain".

Some of the manholes overflowed with water last month as flooding hit the city.

The Daily Echo has contacted Winchester City Council to establish who is responsible for their maintenance and clearing up any leaks.

The Met Office has forecast rain to lighten into showers over the rest of the day, with more downpours due across the county this week.

Daily Echo:

A Southern Water spokesman said: “The heavy rain we are experiencing has overwhelmed parts of the sewerage system in Winchester. This caused a manhole cover in the high street to overflow.

“We will be dispatching a crew to clear up the area today and thank people for their patience.”
