DIRTY water flooded down a Hampshire high street last night after a rotten pipe burst during maintenance work.

Contractors digging up pavement outside Warren and Son stationer in Winchester High Street were surprised to discover the decomposed pipe, which started leaking at around 7pm.

Revellers heading for O'Neill's pub had to hop over the murky liquid which cascaded down the road.

The High Street is due to be closed on Tuesday for six nights between Tower Street and Jewry Street for planned maintenance.
