TWO fires were caused by inmates at a Hampshire prison.

Fire crews from Winchester, Eastleigh and St Mary's fire stations rushed to a fire in a cell at HMP Winchester just after 7pm today.

While they were there another inmate started a fire in their cell.

The crew manager of Winchester fire station told the Daily Echo: "It was two small fires in two different cells, a person started one of the small fires while we were there.

"There were no injuries and everyone was fine and we cleared out the smoke.

"We sent one engine from Winchester, two from Eastleigh and one from St Mary's."

Firefighters have now left the scene after being called off just after 8pm.

A spokesman for Winchester Prison said: “Staff at HMP Winchester quickly extinguished two small cell fires on Friday 1 April.

“There were no injuries to staff or prisoners and the fire service attended to ensure the area was safe."
