CHILDREN at Timsbury Preschool have had a lesson on lambing.
Youngsters met shepherdess Kate Knight and her husband Ian during their visit to Elm Grove Farm at Braishfield and they helped them feed the newborn lambs and pregnant ewes.
They also watched Tilly and Mist, the farm’s sheepdogs, in action herding the flock.
Deputy chair of Timsbury Preschool Susie Blackmoor said the children made a huge fuss of the sheepdogs.
Susie said: “The children then went into the barn to see the young lambs – some only a few hours old. They were allowed to hold the young lambs and bottle feed them. The children were delighted to be given the ‘grown-up’ experience of feeding the lambs – with their little faces full of concentration so the lambs got every last drop of milk. Kate also explained to the children why the lambs are tagged and why numbers are painted on to their fleeces.
“It was an amazing morning and we had 19 preschoolers attending plus their younger brothers and sisters.” After their visit to the farm the children made lamb collages at the preschool and sang Old Macdonald had a Farm and Baa Baa Black Sheep.
