THE last time I wore one of these I was a crying, dribbling, burping baby. I had a dummy. I had teething problems. I liked to cuddle Mr Blanket.

Yet here I am at the age of twenty, with a job, a car and a flat of my own, once again wearing a romper suit. For some reason they are the new winter must have – adults wearing rompers, who’d have thought it? Unconvinced by the latest male fashion craze, I had to try one on myself.

As the cold night drew in around my flat, I shamefully retrieved the romper suit from its bag. Having drawn the blinds – God forbid should anyone see me in it – I slipped into its inviting fleecy cocoon. Once zipped up I walked over to my full-length mirror where I kept glancing myself.

I looked like a giant stubbly baby – funny at first but after an hour or so, hugely unnerving. It was cosy in there, inside the onesie that is. Made of fleece, it wasn’t long before I was sweating like a pig on heat. And then of course there was the way it looked.

Mine was baby blue with white, purple, and pink stars splashed all over it.

Great for a newborn baby but not for anyone who understands the feeling of dignity.

However, wearing a ‘onesie’ isn’t all bad. Mark Hesselgrave, director of onesie distributor Funzee Ltd said: “The onesie is brilliant for relaxing around the home. If you are having a lazy day or snuggling down for the night, it’s comfortable, warm and good fun.”

Mark continues: “At Funzee we have noticed around 75 per cent of orders taken are for women, but most are gifts for boyfriends, partners or husbands.

“So does that mean that men are only wearing them because their girlfriends and wives tell them to do so?”

Paul Foster, 63, from Bitterne, thinks not: “I own two pink romper suits. I only ever wear them in the winter because they keep you really nice and warm. I love wearing mine, I just think they are really novel.”

A large percentage of Mark’s business also comes from students. “They have the time to relax and lounge around and, at the moment, doing it in a onesie seems to be the in thing,”

he said.

Tash Shoddich, a student at Southampton Solent University said: “They look really warm and cosy. I wouldn’t mind wearing one myself.”

The adult Babygrow has also struck a chord with a few famous faces. Robbie Williams posted a picture on his website of himself wearing a pink romper suit on a flight back to the United States from Britain. It would seem that for some men the romper suit is the way forward.

And why not. It’s warm, comfortable and, in the right style and colour, strangely fitting. For me, however, I remain unconvinced.

The worse part of spending the night in my onesie was the following morning.

Hearing a mighty knock at the door I instinctively jumped out of bed to answer it. As I grabbed the handle and pulled it open, suddenly it dawned on me… If only you could have seen the postman’s face.
