SECURITY is being stepped up at a Hampshire school in a bid to prevent intruders entering the grounds.

Priestlands School, in North Street, Pennington, is planning to erect a 6ft steel fence along its boundary with a wood that has been opened to the public.

Head teacher Chris Willshire said groups of youths had been entering the grounds through the woods. The proposed scheme will cost the school more than £20,000.

Mr Willshire is seeking a contribution from Lymington and Pennington Town Council, which has leased the woodland from Hampshire County Council and improved public access to the site. But the council is reluctant to help fund the scheme, which was discussed at a meeting of the amenities committee.

Town clerk Andrew Rimmer said: "We don't feel a steel fence would be appropriate in that location."
