LEADERS of Southampton and Portsmouth City Councils are 'supportive' of an idea to combine the powers of the two authorities.
In a statement released today, Simon Letts, leader of Southampton City Council and his Portsmouth equivealent, Donna Jones, said: “Southampton and Portsmouth City Councils are very supportive of the opportunity that a combined authority offers the economic development and prosperity of the Solent area.
“We will engage in a dialogue with our neighbouring councils, the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership, the local MPs and central government to establish the scope of what can be achieved.”
The plan would mean the two authorities - and possibly others such as Fareham and Winchester - would pool resources and work together, having being given extra powers to do so from Westminister.
As previously reported by the Daily Echo, the plan would see the Solent region take more control over its affairs.
