CAMPAIGNERS fighting a controversial TV show being filmed in Southampton have organised a protest event in defiance of the programme.

The ‘Hope Street’ day is part of a series of protest events against Immigration Street, which is being filmed in Derby Road in St Mary’s and set to be broadcast later this year on Channel 4.

The event will be held at The Hub at Southampton City College, in Chapel Road, on January 10.

It has been organised by the Hope Not Hate group along with Newtown Residents’ Association.

It will see a variety of musical performances, stalls and activities throughout the day, and organisers hope it will attract up to 300 people.

South-east campaigning organiser of Hope Not Hate, Nick Spooner, said: “It is a really important time for the city. The Immigration Street show is not just going to affect people in Derby Road, it is going to affect people across the whole city.

“It is important to have a real positive story that will counter the negative vision the show might portray of Southampton.

“Hope Street is going to show all the amazing stuff that happens in the city, right on people’s doorsteps. There are so many good things that go on in Southampton and they are going on almost under the radar.”

Daily Echo:

Hope Street comes after a community concert saw hundreds of people gather at the Joiners Arms in December and comes three weeks before a protest will see hundreds march on Channel 4’s headquarters in London.

Southampton Cabinet Member for Communities, Satvir Kaur, said: “A lot of people fear the filming of Immigration Street is ripping off their community and this event will reinforce they are still a very united group.”
