No rise in cost of police to council tax payers in Hampshire

Southampton Central Police Station Southampton Central Police Station

HAMPSHIRE residents will not see a rise in the amount they pay police through their council tax despite calls for an increase from the county's top officer.

Chief Constable Alex Marshall had backed an option to increase the police share of the tax by 3.25 per cent but Hampshire Police Authority has frozen their precept and reduced the budget by £8.5 million to £305.6m The decision means the police part of the council tax bill for a Band D household will remain £146.25 for the year and by freezing their share the county force will receive a £3m government grant, which is equivalent to a 3 per cent increase in council tax.

Hampshire Police are trying to save more than £50m by 2015 and a report had found that saving made by applying a council tax rise would be “available for investing back into frontline policing”.

After hearing the decision Chief Constable Marshall said: “My priority is to protect our local visible policing teams, to providing an excellent service, to reduce crime and make the most of our resources.”

I would take no issue in paying extra Council Tax for the Police if I thought that every case they put before the Courts was sentenced correctly!

My issue is that the Police chase their tails in fighting crime only to have the criminals let off with a slap when it comes to Court.

Until we start locking up more criminals the Police will always be fighting a never ending battle! No matter how hard they work, the crims walk free. Must be very disheartening for our hard working Police Force!

If you want the police to turn up
regarding minor crime such as
noisy people etc, tell them you have been a victim of racist comment.
Then half of the constabulary will
turn up.

Comments such as yours are generally from people who have a criminal record and therefore are against the Police.

The Police don't do noise, the Council have a dedicated 24 hour team for that!

This is 2012 not 1980

OK, so I change it to every case they put to the CPS who in turn take it to Court.

Doesn't really change anything. The crims will still laugh at the system!

You could post a Police Officer outside every property in Southampton and still watch crims get away with no punishment!
