A PLATFORM of a major railway station was closed after a gas leak this morning.
Passengers were prevented from using platform four at Southampton Central Station for more than an hour as gas engineers worked to stop the leak.
Trains were diverted to other platforms from 9.23am until the platform reopened at 10.30am.
The station is now back to normal.
A spokeswoman from Southern Gas Networks, who own and operate gas networks in the city, said: “We were called to Southampton Central train station just after 9am this morning following a report of damage to a gas pipe at platform four, which led to a gas leak.
“We attended in our capacity as the local provider of the national gas emergency service.
“Our engineers arrived on site and made the situation safe by isolating the gas supply.
“The platform has now reopened and we are completing our final safety checks before our engineers leave site.”
A spokesman from South West Trains, who manage the station, said: “There was only a minimal impact on our services, with no delays and a handful of platform alterations and passengers were kept updated throughout.”
