FIREFIGHTERS cut a casualty from wreckage following a five-vehicle pile-up on a busy Hampshire motorway.

The two vans and three cars were in collision on the M3 northbound carriageway between junctions 11 at Winchester and 12 at Eastleigh at 6.28am.

Crews from St Mary’s, Redbridge and Eastleigh fire stations arrived to cut the roof off a vehicle and free a person before they were treated by waiting ambulance crews.

The crash blocked two lanes causing delays of up to 25 minutes for motorists with motorists using Lane One and the hard shoulder to pass the incident.

South Central Ambulance Service confirmed one person was taken to Southampton General Hospital by road ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries while two others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

It also caused delays on Bassett Avenue and Thomas Lewis Way in Southampton.

Meanwhile there were more after a crash on Hursley Road in Chandler's Ford, which was being used by traffic as a diversion around the M3.
