AN investigation is underway today after a pedestrian died and a driver arrested following a crash in Southampton.
Winchester Road was shut in both directions this morning following a crash near Worsdworth Road, which happened at about 7.38am on Friday and involved a pedestrian and a Vauxhall Astra.
The 26-year-old pedestrian was rushed to Southampton General Hospital but has now been pronounced dead.
A 44-year-old man from Southampton has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and bailed until May 4.
A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: "The road was closed for several hours while officers carrying out their investigations into the exact cause of the collision.
"Officers left the scene shortly after 11am and handed over the scene to the Highways Agency, who reopened the road at 2pm.
"Officers investigating what happened would like to speak to anyone who saw the collision or saw either the pedestrian or the vehicle prior to the incident.
