IT is a seductive idea.

The promise that local people can take control of what happens in their community is one hardly anybody would turn down.

As we report on page 9 today, the good folk of Shirley and Freemantle in Southampton will be guinea pigs in a pilot project to do just that.

Backed by £4m of Government money, they are among more than 100 neighbourhoods across the country where residents will be given a chance to take control of dealing with the issues affecting their community.

On the face of it, this is a welcome example of pure democracy in action.

What is needed now is for the community to buy into the plan – and we will get the first indication of whether that is happening at the launch tonight.

But will enough people, businesses and groups want – or have the time – to get involved?

Or will it mean Government money to tackle problems in our communities is just spread more thinly?
