THE proposed sell-off of Southampton Airport by owners Heathrow Airport Holdings (HAH) raises the possibility of one of the region’s most important assets taking off in a big way.
We cannot know who at this stage will throw their hat in the ring to purchase the airport, although Spanish company Ferrovial which already part-owns parent company HAH has previously shown an interest.
However, it is unlikely any new owner would wish to simply see the airport stagnate or even go backwards.
It is then exciting news. Regions with vibrant airports attract trade and visitors.
And while there must always be concerns over noise and traffic levels, the proximity of Southampton Airport to London as well as the south coast region puts it in a prime position to capitalise on expansion.
There is bound to be some concern while the bidding takes place.
Businesses in the region will be keen to see whether a new owner will promise investment and bring in new routes and carriers as well as creating a second terminal.
But to stand still is not an option. The city region as well as the airport needs to take flight to ensure it is on the up and up.
