All change for Saints at Leeds (From Daily Echo)

In NA we trust he needs to change things around to give him some idea of who to play in Prem things can only get better COYR's

While a win would be welcome and good for morale, I am not too bothered about the need to stay in the Competition, Leeds will probably want it more, after last years 1 0 defeat when KD had a blinder. Obviously it is a good chance to give squad players an opportunity to persuade NA that they are worth a place in the first XI. I would hate to be beaten by a big score as it would only bring the Blue WUMs and other Trolls on here with their usual plethora of inane, uninformed and insulting remarks, something we will just have to tolerate while they have their moronic fun. A result for us could give us the bragging rights until the next game and would make a nice change.

So after the long drive home Sunday an easier trip back tonight! Wholesale changes worry me a bit - as who will score the goals? Surely we have to play someone who can stick the ball in the back of the net?
Rickie will be rested after the shift he put in on Sunday, as will Steve Davis. I would probably make Lallana play - but as for the rest it's anyones guess!
It's cold up here this morning - thermals recomended!
Whatever we do tonight I doubt it could be anywhere near as bad as when Harry played the kids at Mansfield!

How times change.I remember coming out of Ellland Rd a couple of years ago and getting the bus back into the City and discussing the chance of meeting Leeds at Wembely in the JPT final. Still a trip over the Pennines is always an interesting night out.

On another note. I hope Kelvin "gets the nod" tonight so he can see how much his performances, attitude and professionalism still mean to the fans.

I hope it is a strong team he put's out as winning will be good for the mental state whereas losing could cause long term damage, especially against a team in a lower league

Did anyone watch that Pompey game on telly last night? Christ on a cross, it's no exaggeration to say that was the worst game I've ever seen. United were dire but Pompey made them look like Brazil. The problem was, that there are so many Trolls and WUMs, of neither Clubs persuasion, any sensible debate gets lost in translation and rhetoric. I look in ocassionally and if I sense a change for the better I may come back to reason sensibly, there is absolutely no chance of that at the moment. The truth is that I can offer no suitable advice in the circumstances, it is far too complex for any of us to have any worthwhile input. I like a bit of banter but that is as far as I want to go. Getting too involved leads you into saying things that you neither intend, or will later regret saying them, don't want to go there.

The thing is More Glory when I was on the News I was speaking out in favour of the PST and pointing out the proven pitfalls of BC to those that still wanted to believe that he was reformed and not out to rip your club to shreds. The amazing piece of work by Micah Hall finally got everyone to focus and accept the truth.

Many of the regulars actually stood up for me when one of the knuckle draggers couldn't handle a comment from a scummer no matter what it said. Go ask Spectre, Lew11, Harry Stotle et al.

I never commented on results or team performances or selection issues, not my business and don't know enough about your squad.

It's amazing how many Japanese fans we have acquired since the arrival of Tadanari and Yosh, the more the merrier. The Polish contingent has reduced somewhat, but I welcome them all.

I agree with the first part of your post, at times on Sunday the team looked like they had never met before and games like this when the pressure should be reduced gives them a chance to gel

I have to say if Seed is calling someone names, he probably had good reason, may be he misunderstood the sentiments but I very much doubt it, pontificating on NA's future on the News site is bound to stir both sides up and not wise. Appleton gets very little mention on here, maybe we appreciate what a good job he is doing under difficult corcumstances, I hate it when your own mongs get nasty towards him, but it's not any of my business is it.

Or perhaps like me he is a 'I love Nigel, he got us back to back promotions to get us back into the Premier League earlier than expected and has earnt the chance to manage us at this level, sure he will make mistakes and have to learn from them which hopefully he will do quickly, with the resources he has available to him, but he has my full support and confidence and I stand behind him and am willing to see how he has fared after 38 games' fan.

Actually I was just thinking; does Southampton have an Olympic size pool. I have been there but I couldn't remember. So I googled "Olympic pool and Southampton" and found that website. If you have read some of the articles and remember going to the baths years ago; you will agree that it is very funny. Only the other week one of my buddies from your town (yes it is OK) told me that you could see pooh at the bottom sometimes. I have backed my team all my life. The only time I have ever left a match early was a couple of times in the 90's when I used to take a disabled chap and he couldn't handle the crowds at the end. Even then I still tried to pursuade him to stay until most had left. I've got a home in Palma de Mallorca and am here now. I went to see Mallorca v Real Madrid Sunday night and they started to stream out with 15 mins to go. I went to Goodison Park earlier this season and they streamed out before the final whistle. It's what many do at all clubs.

You talk about local talent staying yet the other day you mocked MLT for staying. Which is it to be? A true Pompey fan would seriously respect the likes of MLT for staying at one club all his life when bigger clubs with more money come calling. Fair play to Matt for staying but if he had gone 2 or 3 seasons before he did to say Chelsea and won a cup; would you resent him or still respect him for expanding his horizons? Kent. I don't think anyone would be happy with relegation just as I don't think anyone is happy in getting only 4 points from 9 games.

Supporting the manager and the team does not mean one should be happy about results, or the mistakes that have been made.

But it does mean getting behind the manager and the team, not just when we are winning or gaining points, but also when we are struggling and dropping points.

We all know that football is a confidence game with players and managers alike under a lot of pressure. Booing Guly every time he steps on the pitch, or calling for a manager to be axed are NOT the ways a supporter SUPPORTS his team as they increase pressure and dent confidence, which is the opposite of what us fans should be wanting to do. Instead we should get behind the team, support them, lift them so that they can give their best to us.

I'm sure the results so far are not what Nigel wanted for the club, and I am sure he is doing his best to get things going in the direction we ALL want. I am confident he can do that. You may not be....

However, it is far too early to be calling for his head just yet. He has to be given time to sort things out, and I hope he is given that time.

Sacking Nigel this early is not the answer. Calling for him to be sacked is simply a short-sighted knee-jerk reaction that is simply not smart.

Sack him and then what? Bring in another manager obviously, but would you then be calling for that manager's head after 10 games if the results don't go our way? By that rationale you would have 4 managers in a season. Or would you give the new man the rest of the season to put things right and then get rid of him at the end of the season? There are simply no guarantees that a new manager would bring results, yet it is also uncertain whether Nigel will succeed.

But what we do know is that Nigel has brought us success in the last two seasons and who as a young manager has a fantastic track record. 424 Games 220 wins 81 draws and 124 losses. There aren't that many managers with a better record.

Far better in my opinion to keep faith in Nigel for the season, and then evaluate the options, which could mean sacking Nigel at the end of the season, or could mean giving him another season in the Championship and if promoted again possibly a half-season back in the Premiership.

And if we got relegated then I won't be happy about it but I would continue to support the team, just as I would had we been relegated to League 2.

I want results to go our way, I want us to win trophies and progress up the Premiership table but I'm not a fairweather supporter and will support our team no matter what league we are in and no matter who our mananager is. I just feel that Nigel can do the job asked of him if he is given the chance. I hope that people like you will allow him that chance.

I tried some Missionary work on the News site a while back, but gave it up as there was too much infighting among the Skate fans to get a sensible word in edge ways. At least you can have your say on here no matter how banal, it is unlikely to be censored, just responded to in an equally banal manner.

I think if you visit the other site; you need to expect that and should expect some grief and accept it. I do like the fact that you can swear more on this site. As for Infighting. I recall Seed calling someone acunt the other day which I thought was a bit harsh as the poor chap was only voicing his opinion on his concerns about Mr Adkins and the need for change.

I have to say if Seed is calling someone names, he probably had good reason, may be he misunderstood the sentiments but I very much doubt it, pontificating on NA's future on the News site is bound to stir both sides up and not wise. Appleton gets very little mention on here, maybe we appreciate what a good job he is doing under difficult corcumstances, I hate it when your own mongs get nasty towards him, but it's not any of my business is it.

Kent. I don't think anyone would be happy with relegation just as I don't think anyone is happy in getting only 4 points from 9 games.

Supporting the manager and the team does not mean one should be happy about results, or the mistakes that have been made.

But it does mean getting behind the manager and the team, not just when we are winning or gaining points, but also when we are struggling and dropping points.

We all know that football is a confidence game with players and managers alike under a lot of pressure. Booing Guly every time he steps on the pitch, or calling for a manager to be axed are NOT the ways a supporter SUPPORTS his team as they increase pressure and dent confidence, which is the opposite of what us fans should be wanting to do. Instead we should get behind the team, support them, lift them so that they can give their best to us.

I'm sure the results so far are not what Nigel wanted for the club, and I am sure he is doing his best to get things going in the direction we ALL want. I am confident he can do that. You may not be....

However, it is far too early to be calling for his head just yet. He has to be given time to sort things out, and I hope he is given that time.

Sacking Nigel this early is not the answer. Calling for him to be sacked is simply a short-sighted knee-jerk reaction that is simply not smart.

Sack him and then what? Bring in another manager obviously, but would you then be calling for that manager's head after 10 games if the results don't go our way? By that rationale you would have 4 managers in a season. Or would you give the new man the rest of the season to put things right and then get rid of him at the end of the season? There are simply no guarantees that a new manager would bring results, yet it is also uncertain whether Nigel will succeed.

But what we do know is that Nigel has brought us success in the last two seasons and who as a young manager has a fantastic track record. 424 Games 220 wins 81 draws and 124 losses. There aren't that many managers with a better record.

Far better in my opinion to keep faith in Nigel for the season, and then evaluate the options, which could mean sacking Nigel at the end of the season, or could mean giving him another season in the Championship and if promoted again possibly a half-season back in the Premiership.

And if we got relegated then I won't be happy about it but I would continue to support the team, just as I would had we been relegated to League 2.

I want results to go our way, I want us to win trophies and progress up the Premiership table but I'm not a fairweather supporter and will support our team no matter what league we are in and no matter who our mananager is. I just feel that Nigel can do the job asked of him if he is given the chance. I hope that people like you will allow him that chance.

People like me are the 22% who dont think Adkins is up to the task,but if you say that on here you are obviously a pompey fan which is amusing because any pompey fans who post on here want him to stay as he i doing a great job in their eyes. no one can dispute the incredidible job Adkins has done getting us to where we are but the cracks are showing big time and not all fans think he can hack it and keep us here. similar in that he is (my opinion) and was the best man for the job; not that HR was successful the first time at Pompey and not with Saints

As for your English, which is far better than most of us can manage, I have just two comments:
1. With the exception of WUMs (wind-up merchants) and skates (do they have schools in Portsmouth?) whose English deserves to be corrected in the most sarcastic way imaginable, enjoy posting and don't worry too much about the English. It's only pedants like me and Osprey who will get offended, so your errors will be providing good therapy - I'm slowly getting cured, although Osprey is suffering badly.
2. Your first post was virtually error free. The only change you could have made to improve it is to have added the word 'HAVE' between your first use of 'JUST' and 'REGISTERED'. 'I registered' is the past simple, used when something is clearly finished (it happened in the past). For example, 'Yesterday, I registered .....' However, as you have used the word 'JUST', it's better to use the present perfect (which is like the past simple, but you add 'HAVE/HAS' and if you use an irregular verb like 'TAKE', you use the past participle form of the verb (TAKEN) rather than the simple past form (TOOK) .....


...... 'Yesterday, I TOOK the bus to town.'

..... 'I HAVE JUST TAKEN the bus to town.'

I hope that helps you. Who knows, it might even provide our resident skates with their first ever English lesson. Pity none of them are able to read.

Fair point, no one ever knows for sure what is really going on behind closed doors and there are a few unaswered questions about future finance.

Well lets get back to the Leeds match.i think that last season both home and away we played some of our best footie against Leeds.At home it was a masterclass in all out attack.At Elland Road it was back to the wall stuff and despite Warnock's team dominating for much of the match we won.We will need plenty of grit tonight to get a victory.Warnock has strengthened and the Leeds side now includes a few ex portsmouth players which will give a bit of extra spice to the match.Leeds have always had a reputation of being a hard side but there again so did the Saints in the days of Ted Bates ALE HOUSE brawlers to paraphrase Bill Shankley.Harking back to my school days i can remember Leeds under Don Revie coming to the Dell in 1962..Leed's goalie at the time was the Scotish international Tommy Younger.On the morning of the match he developed serious guts ache.this was back in the days when there were no substtitutes and most teams travelled with the 11 team members and a 12th man who 9 times out of ten wasn't a goalie.Leeds sent out an s.o.s. back to Elland road and the only goalie available was a 16 year old rookie called Gary Sprake.They had to hire a private plane to fly him south.In those days nobody flew to matches within England.So this was unheard of.The match had to be started 20 minutes or so late.This not the match made the national headlines.

A good shin rapping contest.Hurlock and Kennedy would be even stevens.Case v Dillon Case would shave it.He had a bit of skill as well as a bit of bite.Give Dillon his due he could take a half decent penalty.In the late 70's into the 1980s the two best uncapped English midfielders were Jimmy Case and Nick Holmes both of whom were great servants to SAINTS and of course in Jimmy's case also of Liverpool and Brighton.Another half decent midfield player of the era was Barry Horne who of course played for both Pompey and the mighty SAINTS.Didn't he score for POIRPOISEMOUTH at the Dell once too.Mind you they still got relegated that season.

As for your English, which is far better than most of us can manage, I have just two comments: 1. With the exception of WUMs (wind-up merchants) and skates (do they have schools in Portsmouth?) whose English deserves to be corrected in the most sarcastic way imaginable, enjoy posting and don't worry too much about the English. It's only pedants like me and Osprey who will get offended, so your errors will be providing good therapy - I'm slowly getting cured, although Osprey is suffering badly. 2. Your first post was virtually error free. The only change you could have made to improve it is to have added the word 'HAVE' between your first use of 'JUST' and 'REGISTERED'. 'I registered' is the past simple, used when something is clearly finished (it happened in the past). For example, 'Yesterday, I registered .....' However, as you have used the word 'JUST', it's better to use the present perfect (which is like the past simple, but you add 'HAVE/HAS' and if you use an irregular verb like 'TAKE', you use the past participle form of the verb (TAKEN) rather than the simple past form (TOOK) ..... ...... 'Yesterday, I TOOK the bus to town.' ..... 'I HAVE JUST TAKEN the bus to town.' I hope that helps you. Who knows, it might even provide our resident skates with their first ever English lesson. What your new teacher forgot to mention is that there have been many famous authors from Portsmouth; but none of any note from Southampton. I think that is very revealing.

Another thing. You will also notice that when and if Nigel Adkins does get the sack; lots of fans on here will write things like:

My suggestion is to follow another sport though; say Rugby or Cricket.

A simple fact for a simple keyboard head banging Portsmouth person, If you really need to quote literature the little island you are so proud of wasn't even in the Domesday book, simply you have no history & no future.With people like you inhabiting it there is no sympathy deserved either, oh and check out Jane Austen, really great teachers down your way then, durrr!! The best thing the Saints can do tonight is lose and concentrate on surviving in the Promised Land (PL).
If they have a longer cup run they risk losing players through injury.
NA hasn't the experience to survive on his own in the PL and in the short term needs an experienced coach like Glen Hodde to help him find his feet and strengthen the defence.
Saints haven't improved one bit in the PL, the two goalkeepers brought in are even worse than KD.
NA is a nice guy but he is living on past glory.
I would much rather NC brought in someone to help NA rather than sack him.
Watching WBA last Sunday I can't see anything other than Saints losing by at least 2 goals.
How long is this going to go on before someone does something ?--- to do nothing and keep on with the same old routine is to accept it.
I'm afaid that NC will get out of bed the wrong side one morning and sack NA out of hand without giving him the help he deserves

Was Jane Austen from Southampton, or was she from north of the county who moved with her house teacher to that city when just a young girl for two or three years and moved quickly back home (when she started writing) when she caught typhus and the family run out of dosh?
